HOW TO PRAY MOGRIB BEHIND A CONGREGATION PRAYING ‘ISHAA

Questioner: Assalaamu ‘alaykum

Dr Sharof: Wa’alaykumu ssalaam

Questioner: If one gets to the Masjid while a joint prayer is going on (due to a legitimate reason), and one joins the congregation (with the intention of Moghrib) not knowing that they are praying ‘Ishaa, but one gets to knows when they (rise) after the third Rak’ah, how should one go about it?

Dr Sharof: As for the one who enters the Masjid on a day when rain is falling and meets the congregation on prayer, if he thinks they are praying Moghrib but it is actually ‘Ishaa and he joins the prayer with the intention of Moghrib, and then he discovers that the congregation is praying ‘Ishaa because they rise for the fourth Rak’ah, what should he do? He should remain sitting till the Imaam finishes the fourth Rak’ah and when he (the Imaam) is done (with the fourth Rak’ah) he should say the Tashahhud with him and then say the salutation of peace. Na’am!
