Questioner: What is the difference between the revelation of the Qur’aan and Hadeeth?
Dr Sharof: Allaah revealed the Qur’aan to the Prophet (sollaLloohu ‘alayhi wa sallam) within twenty-three years; this is the most authentic narration, or twenty years. However, ahadeeth are not revealed like the Qur’aan, but it is from the revelation of Allaah. Allaah would speak it in the mind of the Prophet, then the Prophet would say it, (but) it is not brought by the angel. For this reason, it (hadeeth) is not the statement of the Prophet. Its meaning is from Allaah; its statements are from the Prophet. The statement and the meaning of the Qur’aan are from Allaah! The statement and the meaning of the Qur’aan are from Allaah!! I hope you understand.
As for ahadeeth of the Prophet, its meanings are from Allaah while its statements are from the Prophet (sollaLloohu ‘alayhi wa sallam). It is regarding this that Allaah says, “Nor does he speak from (his own) inclination; it is not but a revelation revealed [Soorah an-Najm (53):3-4]
