Questioner: You asked us not to marry more than four wives. Did the Prophet marry only four wives?
Dr Sharof: No, the Prophet married more than four wives. Why? This is because Allaah permitted him to marry more than four wives, but Allaah does not grant us that permission. This is from what we refer to as ‘Khusuusiyaatu Nnabiyy (special specific distinctions of the Prophet)’. From the distinctions is also that if a woman gives herself in marriage to the Prophet, she will automatically become the Prophet’s wife if the Prophet desires her. As for other than him, the person will have to go through her father. For this reason it is Allaah that permits this for the Prophet, but it is not permissible for us. You can’t claim you want to emulate the Prophet regarding this; ‘iwo gege bi taani’?
