EXTRACT FROM THE TAPE, “BELIEFS AND METHODOLOGY OF THE AHLUS-SUNNAH WAL JAMAA’AH

Dr Sharof: I want to ask you, ‘what is the ruling on attending funeral prayers scheduled on the third day, seventh day, (and the) fortieth day for the deceased? What is the ruling on this?’ This is also from what we have been discussing; what is its ruling? Is it Sunnah or Bid’ah?

The Congregation: Bid’ah!

Dr Sharof: Is the one guilty of this a kaafir (an unbeliever) or not? Respond (to the question), Na’am!

The Congregation: Unclear words

Dr Sharof: You tend to muddle your Yoruba words. He becomes a kaafir (an unbeliever), or he does not become a kaafir (an unbeliever). Pick one option.

The Congregation: He does not become a kaafir.

Dr Sharof: Is this agreed upon amongst us or we have some people who hold a different view?

The Congregation: Laughing mode activated!

Dr Sharof: Anyone who has a different opinion should say it, do not start expressing your feelings of resentment after we leave because (it is not from) the methodology of the Ahlus sunnah we are discussing. Ahlus-sunnah do not go behind close doors to express their feelings of resentment; Ahlus-sunnah used to affirm the truth (at anywhere). He becomes a kaafir or he does not become a kaafir?!

The Congregation: He does not become a kaafir.

Dr Sharof: (I am asking) because I don’t know if you have some cards at home (labelled with the word) Kaafir Kaafir Kaafir Kaafir which you wish to give out massively. This has become rampant, so I don’t know. (It is just like) red cards and yellow cards.

The Congregation: Laughing mode activated!

Dr Sharof: This religion requires seeking its knowledge. We all know that this (act) is an innovation, but declaring the one guilty of this as a kaafir is wrong. Such declaration is extremely wrong. It is extremely wrong! Ok! If from the predestination of Allaah the one who makes such (baseless) declaration is seen at such place; note my usage of the Yoruba language, if from the predestination of Allaah you also visit such place and you’re still upon that principle, that is (you believe that) anyone who attends such gathering becomes a kaafir, so what (principle) should we apply on you too?

The Congregation: Laughing mode activated!

Dr Sharof: Ahlus-sunnah do not follow suit. Are we to apply your principle on you? No, no, this is because when the ignoramuses act ignorantly the knowledgeable ones will act upon knowledge. That is our distinction. We will not excommunicate a person because he excommunicates us. Never!
