Questioner: Can the prostration of the angels to Prophet Aadam (‘alayhi ssalaam) be used as evidence to bow when greeting our parents?
Dr Sharof: We can’t use it (as evidence) because if we were to use it as evidence, we will also prostrate exactly as the angles did. Secondly, Allaah commanded the angels to do so (that is, prostrate to Aadam). Who commands you to do the same? Thirdly, the parents and brethren of Prophet Yuusuf (‘alayhi ssalaam) did the same, but in our own Sharee’ah it is not permissible. Such act is from the laws of those who preceded us and is not appropriate for us because there is something which contradicts it in our own Sharee’ah. The Prophet (sollaLloohu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone other than Allaah, I would have commanded women to prostrate to their husbands.’ And you know that he didn’t command women to do so. That is it. For this reason, the people who use this as evidence should go back to learn. They may argue that Allaah commanded the angels to bow for Aadam and that is their evidence, (say to them that) they haven’t learnt knowledge.
