QUESTION AND ANSWER WITH SHAYKH, DR SHAROF GBADEBO ROOJI (HAFIDHOHULLAAH)
Question: Does turban wearing has to do with knowledge or is it from the customs of the Arabs?
Answer: Dr Sharof, “Where do you classify it (between the two)? When you finish seeking knowledge, you may come to ask. That’s it. Firstly, what we know is that the Prophet used to wear it. Ibn Taymiyyah said formerly when the Prophet used to wear his turban, there used to be no tail left at the back (as we some people wearing it today). But Allaah revealed himself to the Prophet (sollaLloohu ‘alayhi wa sallam) as reported in an authentic narration via a dream not when he was carried to the heaven; in a dream. The Prophet said Allaah asked him many questions (in the dream) which he was unable to answer as reported in that narration. So Allaah placed His hand directly on the back of the Prophet (sollaLloohu ‘alayhi wa sallam). He (the Prophet) said when Allaah placed his hands there, he knew the answer to the questions. Ibn Taymiyyah said ever since then, whenever the Prophet would wear his turban, he would place its tail at the exact place where Allaah touched at his back. That’s it. For this reason, if you wear the turban with the intention of following the manner with which the Prophet (sollaLloohu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to wear his own, you will be rewarded. That’s it.
