Iqaamah For Females, Shaykh (Dr) Sharof

Dr Sharof Gbadebo Rooji (hafidhohuLlaah): “We ask too, ‘is it obligatory upon the men to call it?’, because the question has no meaning (when restricted to the females only). Who says it is obligatory upon them (the men) to call the Iqaamoh? The Iqaamoh is Sunnah. It is Sunnah for both females and males, but they (the scholars) say if the females do not call it; it is not as bad as if the males do not call it. If the females do not call it, it is not as bad as if the males do not call it. They (the scholars) say ‘because Iqaamoh requires that the voice be raised and they say the females are not amongst those expected to raise their voices before the people.’ That is why they said there is no harm if they (the females) don’t call it. But for a male, what is yours (that is, what should stop you from saying it)? That is why if the females do not call it, it is not as bad as if the males do not call it. (However) if a male doesn’t call it, it doesn’t mean his prayer is invalid. You know Solaat (prayer) starts with Allaahu akbar (the opening takbeer) and ends with Assalaamu ‘alaykum (the salutation of peace) and we know that Iqaamoh comes before the first Allaahu akbar (opening takbeer). So if that is the case, as for the one who says, ‘O people, we forgot to say the Iqaamoh (before our prayer), we would do prostration of forgetfulness’. Why prostration of forgetfulness? The Iqaamoh left out is not from the prayer, therefore there is no prostration of forgetfulness required.”
